Liberalism, and boy do I hate the WORD! Basically is as follows:
Liberalism is a political concept that has changed meaning over the years.
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, liberalism emphasized the desirability of allowing individuals to follow their own wishes and pursue their own goals rather than thinking first of the common good.
By the late nineteenth century political and economic liberalism had come to reflect the belief that a society functions best with little government regulation. Liberals favored free trade and an unregulated economy. The conditions deriving from that philosophy led to twentieth-century liberalism, which supports an activist government intervening to regulate the economy and remedy social problems.
Today liberals support government programs to ensure freedom of opportunity for individuals suffering discrimination, to provide help for those in economic need, and to set standards and regulations in such matters as the environment, safety in the workplace, and business practices. Contrasted with conservatism, liberalism tends to be associated with the Democratic party.
But there is just one "wee" little problem with all of this.
During this time of crisis, we cant afford to let Liberals sing "give peace a chance" while smoking a joint and hoping that osama does not nuke thier city.

| Thanks for that post Phil, it was definitely not wasted. I had actually learned some things which I had never known either. The only question is, where do you see it going today and into the future? |

I always thought of liberals as being very care free and making freedom their number one priority. For the conservatives, other things like security and gun laws are in their priiority list. Also most liberals are NOT going to be religious, and the conservatives will always be religious. |

What did President Roosevelt say at the end of his speech when we entered WWII. "So help me God". What is that many US Presidents do when they get sworn in on January 20th, but swear on a bible.
Out of curiousty what is the one thing that President Bill Clinton did on Sundays. How many times did you see him toting his bible after church. What does the former President Carter have affiliations to. Both of these men are from the South. The South is slathered in Religion. Hence it being called the "Bible belt". It is so thick you can cut it with a knife.
But the freedoms many Americans enjoy today did they come by freedoms in a "free sense". I would say no many of the freedoms that Americans enjoy today had to be earned. Mostly by blood. And wars. Protests and marches and not willing to give up their seats on a bus to people when you are just as tired as the next guy from work. Freedoms comes at a cost. Is freedom really free? Is it a right or a privilage? Maybe its both? |

I'd think Conservatives and Liberals believe in freedom. It's the American way. |

| If by liberalism you mean modern American liberalism the bulk of it was born out of the New Deal. The liberals of the 1930's were mainly into big government, but their differences between conservatives was not so great. This is the reason that the Decratic Party was half liberal and half conservative up until the late 1960's when failure of the Tet Offensive pushed out the conservatives and far left elements took over the party. Ironically, the failed escalation of the Vietnam War and the Tet Offensive embarrassment happened during LBJ's years and LBJ was the most liberal of President ever, probably even more so than Jimmy Carter |

By liberalism I mean this:
Today was a perfect example. I drove my HUMMER to pike street, which is the local liberal hangout and messhall for these little creatures.
I scanned the parking lot and low and behold a van had taken up almost two spots but there was room for me to fit. SO I did.
Now here is the difference between a liberal and a republican. WHen the van left, it appeared as if I took up the two spots. The liberals were all screaming at me about it, none of them ever thought for instance that the previous car forced me to park this way. It never occured to them.
It also never occured to them as they were keying my car and screaming gas guzzler that I use BIO dIESAL which gives off less ommissions than a model airplane.
I wish they would go away. They are so ignorant.
