Looking back on wars which we have fought in, what do you believe has had the biggest impact in terms of how we approach situations in today's war? And in terms of how we are cautious upon entering a foreign region?

Vietnam probably has had the most effect on us today than any war. Are military is definitely prepared better for fighting unconventional wars. Vietnam has giving us a steady anti-war protesters that we never had from world war 2.

I think world war ?2, and specially the Atomic bombs used during the war on Hiroshima& Nagasaki because, to this day, the people of Asia have still not forgotten or forgiven Japan for its many atrocities of WWII and earlier.

i think vietnam war does have a big efect on the US in particular, if you want to talk 'world' then of course its going to be the world wars.

every war that you go through nowadays in US(since there have been so many Smile ) you always hear the saying 'we don't want another vietnam'.

so i think we have learned our lesson there...

its got to be this war. I mean lets face it, if we do WIN, we will have planted a nice big tree called democracy in the middle east.

once that tree sprouts fruit and the wemon get to walk around in jeans and buy gucci it will be all she wrote.

Seriously, the laws over there are horrible. Once democracy is planted in that region, my grandchildren can go to college there one day and we accepted just like in the states.

I dont know why people just dont understand this.

i think its pretty clear that this administration isn't paying attention to many, if any at all, of history's lessions learned from previous wars. perhaps, though, this is because the war cabinet is trying to drum up an armed services unlike anything that has been created yet. i have heard rumors that we would have gone to war somewhere sometime during this administration regardless of 911 so that the powers that be could test new war strategies, build a lighter, faster army and test strike capability.

I'd have to say WWI in the sense that the first world war is what solidified the spheres of capitalism in the world when capitalism was not as stable as it is today.

For defining a just war: WW2
For influence on USA domestic society: Vietnam

WWII changed the world and shifted powers as never before on such a short time scale.

BTW, if you believe that Iraq is or will become a democracy then you've not read their "constitution"!

Iraq can never be a true democracy as it is being set up as a client state of the USA. That is, it is a democracy in the sense that it will only allow a government acceptable to the United States.

When Diem ran South Vietnam, he was hated by the Vietnamese and Ho Chi Minh was far more popular as it was Minh who led the liberation and independence against French colonization. There was to be a general election in Vietnam and all the polls showed that Minh would win in a landslide.....we all know how that worked other.

Other democraticly elected governments that were overthrown or subverted so as to place a USA client regime included:

Argentina, Chile, Indonesia (the USA friendly dictator Suwato would later launch a massive genocide campaign in East Timor) the CIA over throw of Iran that led to the intallation of the Shah of Iran, Greece, Italy, etc etc etc

I would say WWII because it's those who won the war who are leading the world now.

Bangfor1... that's a great observation.

Looking back upon the original post, I think Vietnam had the biggest impact on HOW the current war is being fought. However, WWII in my opinion has had the most significant impact on the world... and needless to say, the Civil War has had the most impact on the US. (Yes, in my opinion more than the Revolutionary War, because I truly believe independence for the US would have happened one way or another... whereas the Civil War had a stronger impact on how the US developed as a nation).

I would say that the WWII had brought a great impact. Through this war, the people knows how important the democracy in one´s land.
