So what does the board feel about Rumsfeld's resignation? I believe it's the first step in the administration's justification for a future change in direction with regard to the war in Iraq. Specifically, I believe this is the ONLY way the Bush administration will be able to set a timeline for withdrawing troops without having to go back on their stance to this point. A new Sec'y of Defense will be able to guide the administration with an expert opinion different from what's been said up until now.

Mark my words, the administration's actions will be changing (just in time for the next Presidential election), and it will be supported by a new way of thinking from a new Defense Sec'y.

Would love to hear what others think.

A lot of Republicans are upset that they didn't do this earlier. Hopefully the new replacement will be a good secretary of state.

The new appointee is an insider, which means chances are he was never against to what the others were doing

OR... he'll be a "puppet" and a face behind a new strategy that Rummy couldn't suggest without the party being viewed as doing a 180.

You know that if they change their policy in any way at all, Dems will say "See, we told you our way was better."

The Rep's have to have a person to point to and say, "Based on this new assessment, we think it's the next logical course of action."

That's a good strategy and Rumsfeld could have lived with any about face, except that everyone thought the magic bullet is to see him step down, which he did.
