| Universal health care is badly needed, because the number of those who are being affected is more than the 40 million official figure. This by itself is huge and it's not going to let up, it'll continue climbing. |

| I think that the cost of health insurance and health care is insane, not to mention the prescription costs. It really hurts the small business owners the most, its hard for them to keep good employees because the costs of the benefits are too much for them to take on so they lose a good employee to one of the big guys. |

| I agree. It's sad that we are so afraid of socialism that we won't take steps for the health of our own citizens. |

| One relief for those whose employers are not paying for them is to join a group insurance that are out there in many catagories that are affordable, while at the same time there is a basic insurance that covers just the basics and costs less $100 a month which isn't bad. Sometimes it is also possible to get a discount from the companies that are insuring your car or home if they carry health insurance. |

I know this topic was on a thread some time ago. Universal healthcare would be a disaster in the US. Every conversation I have with someone from a country with national healthcare ends the same way....
"How long does it take for your loved one to get an important test such as a mammography?"
Answer: "Sometimes longer than it takes to effectively treat the ailment."
Thank you very much.... I'm a small business owner who hates his health insurance company because of the ridiculous premiums. However, I understand the value of being able to get proper tests, treatments and medications when needed.
This is not to say there's room for improvement... but it's not in the structure of the health insurance, it's in the total lack of limiting devices on frivolous lawsuits. |

| I think something needs to be done about health care in the United States that's for sure, sweeping the issue under the rug is not helping people who do not have it and rack up thousands of dollars in health care. |

| Coda - national health care doesn't mean you can't have other health care if you wish to. Right now, for many people, there are no options - they can't afford to have health care at all. |

| I think the reviewer has a good point if we had national health care at least there would be some kind of care for those who have nothing now. |

While it probably depends upon the country, I do know that UK and Canada healthcare options outside of the national coverage is wildly out of reach of most citizens... It's been likened to a class system, where only the very rich, who could likely afford the healthcare to begin with even without coverage, can afford the healthcare coverage.
However, I do agree there should be a middle-ground, and to an extent we do have that in the US. Any hospital must treat someone in need. The issue is non-emergency and preventive measures that people without organized coverage don't get enough help with. Keep in mind, there is Medicare / Medicaid for some without any coverage... and many states offer prescription drug plans, as well as medical clinics. |
