If the economy of the US fell apart and you were barely scraping enough together to live and support your family, would you illegally immigrate to Canada if you knew there would be much better opportunities there?

If something like this happens and I assuming that I am a US citizen, I would probably use legal ways to go to Canada. I would start applying as a tourist, then find an employer who will sponsor me so that I and my family can live there and be granted citizenship.

What if that was not possible (you are not able to legally immigrate)? Let's say you don't have the money or skills to do it.

I think a lot of people if given this situation would think about it if it was a matter of survival, but you see many people migrating here were that is not the case.

That's the point. I think illegal immigrants are villianized and I think that taints the whole discussion - people just can't sympathize.

I don't villanize the illegal immigrants. I think they fill an economic need by the US to a certain extent. However, they are for a fact "illegal." I do not think that they should get rights as a legal resident and I think they should pay taxes.

If they paid taxes, they wouldn't be here. It's simple.

If you look at the letter to Senator Sarbanes (below), you'll find that a lot of Americans are upset for a good reason.

This is funny. The guys from my country dream to go in USA and work for their family. They are like those puritans which came in America for a brand new living...and you want to immigrate Smile
