The pioneers of this nation were very religious people, maybe as fundamentals as today's Muslims, but that has changed or had been watered down somewhat and there is a religious freedom, no one is being persecuted for their belief. Yet, the big majority are still Christians, and it's difficult to separate them from their belief in a nation they built. If you don't have some kind of code of conduct that you practice with some awe, what's going to be the end result? Maybe a gay or some kind of anarchy. There's nothing that can replace religion to bring people together or to enable people interact with similar outlook and God has to be part of everything so that abiding by some code of conduct is possible.

Most of the framers of the Constitution were deists, not Christians. If we follow the logic of some of the posters here, then our money should read "In Some Sort of Supreme Being We Trust." Then we truly would be in line with the religious thinking of our forefathers. Religion of any sort has no place in government. That's not to say that a legislator cannot call on whatever god he or she believes in for guidance or strength in governing. We are all free to do that, and that is what the constitution does for us. I know that a lot of folks would like nothing better than to make Christianity the national religion, but believe me, that would truly be the end of freedom as we know it in this country. Separation of church and state is the single greatest protector of ALL of the other freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great nation.

You know...you don't need God or Buddha or even Bugs Bunny to adhere to a code of conduct. The principles of fairness, honesty and decency derive less from organized religion than from upbringing and example. Your moral compass is honed from watching your parents be nice to people, not from watching some sweaty TV preacher yell at you from the book of Revelation.
