Would the United States be run any different if we did not have any reference to God in our laws, money or Constitution? Would it the United States government be any different if the there wasn't any references to God or higher being in the US Constitution?
I would say so. I would say that that the Constitution is left open for change that allows us not to worry of every not evolving. I believe there is plenty of room to allow us to grow even with statements and references to God and religion. Or not to have any religious refereneces.
If you think about how many countries are still having civil wars over religion. Ireland is the first comes to mind. How many other countries do you see battling to put their religion first. How many countries have religious governments that don't allow any other form of prosiliting or missionary work or religion.
The United States stands out the most for Religious Freedom or to not to have to believe in God.
What do you think? Do you think our country would be any different if we did not have any references to God or religious freedom in the Constitution?

I am sorry Phil but if the worst thing that you can think of is our children being adopted by Gays then you are insane. I say where is God when a child is being molested by an adult that is someone they are supposed to trust?

I am just a very strong beliver in seperation of church and state. It upsets me that religion plays such a large role in the elections. I mean in the last election I can not count the number of times that I heard about Bush being a born again Christian! Does that change his quailifications somehow?

Good question about how much people know of our constitution. Do public schools teach at least the concept of what our constitution stands for anymore? I'm not making a point, it's a real question... I don't have children to know what is or isn't covered.

Any teachers out there who want to chime in? Any parents? Any students?

I know that in High School, which wasn't that long ago for me as I am only 24 we did learn the constitution forwards and backwards but I went to a good school so I am not sure what some of the other schools are doing out there.

Thanks, Justagirl. We did indeed cover the constitution when I was in HS as well, however I was in a Legal Studies specialty in High School, so I wasn't sure if that's why.

Somehow, I managed to get through 12 grades of public school without ever having covered US Geography. Sometimes I think I know more about World geography than I do about US Geography, though I have made efforts to teach myself about US locations.

I think fewer than 70% of high school graduates can identify the US on a map.

Freakin', that's pretty scary if it's true. I was talking about things like not knowing which states border the mississippi river, etc. But to not know where the US is on a world map is way out there.

Please tell me you were just making an extreme statement to make a point. In other words, I hope it's not really true that 70% can't look at a world map and know exactly where the US is. If that is in fact true, then MAN are we in bad shape.

The USA is a nation with millions of Christians, Muslims and Jews. To have laws against references to God is just silly.

MHJ, the reason is because in what context to you refer to God, because different religions have different views on this. To refer to God as Christians would refer to God is violating the religious freedom of Jews & Muslims.

considering most of America doesn't know anything other than the Hollywood pap being fed them, knowing God is the least of their problems.

I'd be more afraid about them not being able to read or write.

i don't feel that any references to God seem to cause any harm to anyone. Much ado about nothing

actually, considering the sickness that seems to permeate any Muslim country when religion is the forefront of their laws and societies... I'm all for dumping it now!
